Ever heard of No Impact Man? You should read his blog and his chronicle of a year spent trying to have zero impact, no carbon footprint. It’s really interesting and he’s extremely honest about what works, what’s logical, and what’s straight-up insane to ask a human to give up.
Now, in the post I’ve linked, he’s put together a list of his green how-to’s. There are some serious nuggets in there. Read em and adopt as many as you can or dare. 
But start slowly, and be kind to yourself.
